Senior Grad Ads on sale Nov 22 - Dec 16

Note: The website is active now 11/22-12/16. The ad needs to be purchased by 12/16 midnight, all times are Pacific Times.

November 22, 2022 (by email to all Class of 2023 students, parents, and guardians from Adviser Sharon Alder)

Hello Senior and Senior Parents,

This is the long-awaited Senior Grad Ad Email is finally here. I am so sorry for how long this has taken to get out to you. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a hiccup with my health, but I am back and all is well.heartThis is going to be a long email, but it should answer all questions or problems if you are patient with it. Don’t hesitate to email me if you have any confusion or questions, I am always happy to help.

Oooh before we get started…Yearbooks go back on sale Nov. 28-Dec 16. This will be the last guaranteed selling time. Meaning, to guarantee that you have a book in June of 2023 you must order it before Dec. 16th. After that date there is no guarantee that we will have an extra book for you at the end of the year and we can’t print them on a single order basis.

What is a Grad Ad: Students and Parents have the opportunity to purchase a “Grad Ad”. This is a space in the senior section of our yearbook where you can celebrate your child’s achievements with a tribute in their yearbook. Celebrate with words of congratulation, praise and encouragement.

Pricing: Full Page Ad $200, 1/2 Page Ad $110, 1/4 Page Ad $55, 1/8 Page Ad $30

Sale Dates: The website is active now 11/22-12/16. The ad needs to be purchased by 12/16 midnight, all times are Pacific Times. The plant is in Dallas, TX. Once you purchase the ad, it takes a day or two before the program will send you a link to build your ad. It doesn’t happen right away. You will have until January 3, 2023 to complete the building of it. Just in case you wanted to know, the sale of these ads finalizes the size (page numbers) of our book, there is no size limit right now. Meaning we can have a 380 page book or a 425 page book, it doesn't matter. But after Winter Break we have to set the size of the book and we cannot change it once it’s set.

Do’s and Don’ts on the Ad: Not too many :-). Please don’t put naked baby pictures in there, even if there are strategically placed toys and whatnot. Just please no. We ask that these are in a positive celebration style. WHS Yearbook reserves the right to to edit ads based on school policy and yearbook guidelines.

A.  In order for the Grad Ads to look uniform and like they are a part of the 2023 book we will be using the same fonts and background colors chosen for the rest of the pages in the book. The Editors will change these on your ads when they upload them from the website to the book.

a. Fonts being used are: Name: Newton Regular 48, and copy Proxima Nova thin 12

b.  Colors, it’s too complicated for me to put in this email but I promise they will look good and compliment your photos. Trust my kiddos, they are very proud of their book and they like it to look good. :-)

Okay here we go… There are pictures of what you should see at the end of this document

Step One: Here is the link to the website in which you will be purchasing and building your ad. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and find where it says Yearbook Products and Ads and select it.

https://www.balfour.com/washington/woodinville/woodinville-high-school

Step Two: Fill in your student information. Then click on the “shop for this student” button.

Step Three: select the size of the ad you want to purchase.

Step Four: Click add to cart.

Step Five: Checkout. Once you pay for the ad it takes a bit (24-48 hours) before they send you a link to build your ad. I’m not entirely sure exactly how long it takes to get the link but I do know it’s not immediately after you purchase.

Step Six: Complete the building of your ad by January 3, 2023.

If you have any problems with the site you have to contact Customer Support 1-800-BALFOUR (800-225-3687).

Yearbook News from Adviser Sharon Alder

October 12, 2022 (by email to all Class of 2023 students, parents, and guardians)

Senior Photos: These are due Oct. 27th. PLEASE remember you don’t have to have a professional photo. If you have an appointment with a professional photographer after this date it’s okay. For your senior photo you can turn in a nice picture of yourself from your phone or that a friend took.

*Also, please know, if you would like a “nice” photo taken, I have some great student photographers in my Yearbook class who would love to take care of you and they will give you the photos for free to do what you want with them. Just email me and we will set you up with them.

**Please know that this deadline may seem early (it has been on or around this date for the last four years I have been the adviser here at WHS :-)). This is due to our deadlines with our publisher. We get these in early in order to make our deadlines and have our books for Senior Awards night in early June. :-)

***Email me, salder@nsd.org if you have any questions about this Woodinville Tradition.

Turning in Photos: You (Senior and Parent) will receive an email with a link to upload your photo. Each link is specific for you and one picture. I am not exactly sure what the email will say, it could be from Balfour (our yearbook company), it could say Woodinville Yearbook or Mrs. Alder. I cannot remember how they came last year and this is our second year turning in pictures like this. Important Info: If you have a professional photographer who will upload your picture for you, you will need to forward that specific link to them.

Just in case you are curious this new way is to ensure we are getting the photo you want and it allows me to keep better track of who has turned in a picture and who we may still be missing. We love having as complete a senior section as we can. Not perfect but as close as possible. :-)

Time to expect this link email: I am sorry that all I can say is soon. I am waiting on information being uploaded to our Balfour Yearbook Site before I can send the emails out.

I appreciate all of the kind words or encouragement and help we get from our Woodinville Community.

Class of 2023 Information from Ms. Alder

June 23, 2022 (by email to all Class of 2023 students, parents, and guardians--please note updated sales dates for Sale Time One, Two, and Sale Time Three below*)

Dear Class of 2023 and Parents/Guardians:

Here is the first official Yearbook Email of your Senior Year. Whoo Hoooo!

First, I want you to know that your Yearbook Staff and I are going to do our very best in creating you a yearbook that will make you proud and happy. We will need your help from time to time so when we ask for pictures and answers to our questions to use as quotes in the book we need them as quickly as possible. I will send out these emails periodically, I try to keep my Seniors and their parents informed. Here is a bit of a guide to help you with these emails: key information will be highlighted in yellow, upcoming events in green and things we need in orange.

Interesting facts: Yearbooks are built and printed 16 pages at a time. Take out your book from this last year, look at the top, see those mini books, there are 25 of them. Each of those mini-books are printed when all 16 pages are completed in that section. Those printed pages sit in a rack at the Balfour plant in Texas waiting for us to finish all of the sections. The entire book is complete at the end of March (This explains why the Spring Play, final Band/Choir concert is missing or why Spring Sports photos are always the first few games and some practice). I share this information with you so that you understand the reasoning behind why we have certain due dates. No deadline is set by chance or willy-nilly there is always a reason for why we do things the way we do. This all leads us to getting our books earlier than anyone in our district. We hand the Senior Class their books at the beginning of June on Senior Awards Night. The Grad Ad deadline is set in December because that is when we finalize how many pages we need for our book, this changes each year with how many ads are sold and what sizes are sold. Senior pictures are due in Oct. because that is our first deadline of pages to complete because they are specially printed with a UV coating on them so they don’t fade over time and all this is in order to have our book on time. See everything has a reason behind it. :-)

Dates you need to know:

Yearbook Sales ($55.00):

  1. *Sale Time One: Online (Aug 24-Aug 26) and in-person at Falcon Days (Aug. 25 and 26)  Online is through your Touchbase account.

  2. *Sale Time Two: Aug 31-Sep 16. Online and in-person at main/cashier's office.

  3. *Sale Time Three: Nov 28-Dec 16, this is the last opportunity for you to guarantee the purchase of a 2023 Yearbook. Online or in-person at the main/cashier's office.

  4. Grad Ads: Each year parents opt to purchase some space in the yearbook to congratulate their senior. There are full, half, quarter and eighth page ads for sale. Everything is done online, you upload photos, create your ad and pay for your ad through Balfour website. I will send the link, instructions and information in late October. This will be available Nov. 21 through Dec. 16th.

  5. Senior Photos: These will be due on Thursday Oct. 27. Traditionally at WHS we allow the seniors to turn in a “nice” picture. This is to replace the ASB ID photo taken during Falcon Days. This is completely optional and not meant to cause any Senior stress. These photos can be taken with your phone, at Grandma’s Farm in Wisconsin next to the duck pond or professionally it is entirely up to you. We want to invite all seniors to turn in a “nice” photo of themselves to be used in the Senior Portrait section. My yearbook staff is also available to take a “nice” photo for the senior, free of charge and we will share the photos with the senior if they want to use them for anything else.

    1. Instructions on where to upload your photos will come in the middle of September. Please do not send me your photos to my school email. We will also send out an email in the middle of Oct. letting Seniors and their parents know if we received your “nice picture”.

    2. Here are the basic requirements about these photos:

      1. Head and shoulders photos are preferred, we will zoom in on body shot photos.

      2. No pets, props (golf clubs, baseball/softball bats, cars etc.) hats, clothing with words or words that can be read in the background. (WHS Letterman’s Jackets are not considered props and are completely acceptable.) We know these are great pictures, put them on your Grad Ad or turn them in for other page considerations.

      3. The digital size of the picture is important: It needs to be a high quality picture, however please know that most Iphones and Androids take high quality photos and they will work if you don’t want to use a professional photographer. :-) Photos need to be at least 300dpi and no bigger than 10MB. Don’t fret if there is a problem with your picture we will contact you.

So that is pretty much all I can think of for right now. Please don’t hesitate to email me any questions that you have. I will look for any immediate questions that you have for the next day and then I will be checking my email periodically throughout the summer but please know that it may take a bit to respond. I have to recharge my batteries too for next year.

Please be reminded that if during the course of the year more than one yearbook is purchased – there will be no refunds.  If you purchase two yearbooks, you will be given two books, not one book and a refund for the other.

Class of 2023 Senior Yearbook Photos: Due Thursday, October 27, 2022

Provided size and other requirements are met, as outlined below, seniors can submit a photograph for the yearbook from whichever professional photographer a family chooses; OR a photograph taken by an amateur; OR seniors can choose to have the free Dorian photo (taken for their required ID card during Falcon Days or on make-up day September 13) published in the yearbook.

All images taken by Dorian are sent directly to our yearbook adviser, Ms. Alder. Seniors who may want a different senior photo published in the yearbook other than the one Dorian provides must submit the photo via an upload directly to Balfour* per the following guidelines:

  • Senior photos must be uploaded by Thursday, October 27, 2022
  • The image should be in JPEG format
  • Since our yearbook is a reference for the school year, the image must be a vertical headshot of head and shoulders (No hats, no animals, no face paint, no props, and no words on shirts or around the student – just the student. Photo submitted that are not head/shoulder shots will be zoomed in by the yearbook editors.)
  • The image must be 300 dpi (Maximum file size is 10MB per image. Be sure cell phone photos or photos from the web meet these size requirements so they can be reproduced in the yearbook. If the senior is working with a professional photographer, please upload the original file from your photographer.)
  • There is no need to resize your photo. All photos uploaded per the size requirements specified above will be adjusted to fit the yearbook specifications.

*Details regarding the upload of senior yearbook photos will follow from Yearbook Adviser Sharon Alder in early August, well before the October 27 deadline. Once the information becomes available, most professional photographers can upload the image for the senior or can provide the senior with a .jpeg image digitally for the senior to upload themselves.

Class of 2023 Grad Ads will be available for purchase November 21 – December 16, 2022. Various sizes/pricing will be available.  Yearbook Adviser Sharon Alder will be sending an email to the Class of 2023 in early August with complete details and information.
